CALENDAR BIRTHSTONES
January.........Garnet; found in shades of red, and also green and yellow.
February........Amethyst; crystalline quartz in purple, lilac and mauve shades.
March............Aquamarine; of which sky and dark blue are the favoured colours.
April..............Diamond; the hardest mineral on the planet, and the monarch of gems.
May...............Emerald; quality examples of this green gem are rare.
June..............Pearl or Moonstone; pearls are ‘gems’ from water; moonstone shines like the moon after which it was named.
July...............Ruby; the predominantly red variety of corundum.
August...........Peridot; bottle or olive green in colour.
September......Sapphire; the blue, green, pink, yellow and colourless varieties of corundum.
October..........Opal or Tourmaline; opal has a huge range of colours including the orange Mexican fire opal; tourmaline also have a very varied colour range.
November.......Yellow Topaz or Citrine; both gems of which are in the yellow shades.
December.......Blue Topaz or Tanzanite; both blue, but blue topaz is not found naturally in nature; the rarer Tanzanite is blue with a purple flash.
